Money and work
Build a budget that works with irregular money
When income changes, plan from the smallest amount you can reasonably expect and decide what every dollar needs to do first.

Take these three steps.
- Write down money you expect this month after taxes, not the largest paycheck you have ever received.
- List required costs first, then savings goals, then flexible spending.
- Set a weekly amount for flexible spending so you can adjust before the month is gone.
“This month I expect ____. I must cover ____. I want to save ____. That leaves ____ for everything flexible, or ____ each week.”
If that is not possible
Keep another route open.
If the numbers do not fit, the budget is giving you information. Reduce a flexible cost, change the timing, ask about assistance, or revise the goal instead of pretending the gap is not there.
